Democratization of Journalism

February 18, 2010

Great talk today at GW- Thank you School of Media and Public Affairs.

One of the interesting points they raised was that the large photo on the front of the newspaper is not because of “kids dont like to read anything without large pictures” but more that large cover photos takes up more real estate, and thus they dont have to pay as many journalists to write cover stories.

It was a neat way to think about how economics can determine the user interface of a printed piece.

I asked a questions about how to blend commerical journalism, with the new crowdsourcing freemium model of journalism.  Both have obvious SWOTs that I am interested in combining.  Ideally- Speed and low barriers to entry of the crowdsourcing, but the quality of professional journalism.
